The Rourke Art Museum is pleased to present Oil in the Fields, an exhibit by German photographer Andy Scholz.

In the summer of 2013, Scholz came to North Dakota to travel through and photograph the Bakken oil fields. The resulting images and video will be displayed at the Rourke this fall.

Scholz’s images show the transient nature of community in western North Dakota. Documenting Man Camps, hotels, temporary housing, and the strain on the infrastructure, Scholz’s photographs portray a lonesome and forlorn existence in the middle of a boom. His version of the American Dream is complicated; his images are beautiful, yet subtly heartbreaking.

Scholz will be in Fargo through October, lecturing at various venues including NDSU. He will be available for interviews throughout the month.

Scholz grew up in the northern German port town of Wilhelmshaven. He currently lives in Essen with his wife and three children. He is a photography professor at Regensburg University. His photographs have been shown in museums and galleries across Europe, including Regensburg Art Museum, Museum Kunstpalast Düsseldorf, and the National Portrait Gallery in London.
