Terri Clark’s career began in 1987 following her high school graduation, when she packed her belongings into her mother’s Honda Civic and made the drive from Canada to Nashville.
Upon her arrival in Nashville, Clark began playing music for tips at a local lounge. After impressing the management at Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge, Clark landed a job as the club’s house singer. For the seven years following, the singer continued performing at the lounge and working odd jobs while trying to land a record contract.
In 1994, she auditioned for Mercury Records and signed with the label’s president shortly after. Clark’s self-titled debut album was released in 1995, and included chart-topping hits such as “Better Things to Do,” “When Boy Meets Girl,” and “Suddenly Single.”
