Red River Valley Veterans concerts slated for May 3 in Perham
PERHAM - The Red River Valley Veterans Concert Band will perform two concerts Thursday, May 3. The first convert will be held at Perham Living at 7 p.m. and the second concert will begin at 8:15 p.m. at the Perham Center for the Arts. Both concerts are free of charge and open to the public.
The Red River Valley Veterans Concert Band is a 40 - 52 piece group, whose season is from September to mid-June, performing 40 plus concerts a season. Often concert evenings have two performances, one concert for the veterans and elderly at a nursing home and another at a VFW, American Legion or other venue. The Veterans Band music honors all the branches of the services, Air Force, Army, Navy, Coast Guard and Marines by playing their branch and having them stand to salute if able.
The Red River Valley Veterans Concert Band's musical mission is "Promoting Patriotism Through Music." The Red River Valley Veterans Concert Band has many veteran members, men and woman.
Angel of Remembrance Dinner is May 5 in Lake Park
LAKE PARK - A chicken and rib dinner with all the fixings, plus angel food cake for dessert: The May 5 Angel of Remembrance Dinner at Lake Park's American Legion will offer all this and more, at a cost of just $20 per person.
But more importantly, organizers of the fundraiser are hoping to raise enough money to begin construction this spring on a commemorative bronze statue known as the Angel of Remembrance. That statue, once finished, will form the centerpiece of a new healing garden at Essentia Health St. Mary's Hospital in Detroit Lakes.

Photo contest reminder
The deadline for the winter/spring Park Rapids Downtown Business Association photo contest is Monday, April 30. Max Bailey Photography sponsors the contest and awards a professionally finished, 11-by-14-inch print of the winning photograph in each of three categories: Park Rapids Area Lake Scenes, Recreation and Wildlife and Main Street Scenes. Sculpture wanted for Red Bridge Park
The City of Park Rapids and Park Rapids Arts and Culture Commission are accepting entries for a Sculpture Trail in Red Bridge Park.
Entries of completed works are invited and must be submitted along with a $25 entry fee by the end of the business day Monday, April 30.
Artists will be notified of selection committee results on May 18 and will have until June 8 to install their works. Each artist whose work is selected will receive a $500 honorarium. The entry form with more details is available to be downloaded at

class='subhead'>Contemporary poet reading at free Brainerd event
"Verse Like Water," the visiting poet program of Central Lakes College, presents Major Jackson at noon on Wednesday, May 2 in the Chalberg Theatre at the Brainerd campus. The event is free and open to the public.
Jackson is a significant voice in contemporary American poetry. He will be reading from his four books, and offering a craft talk after the book signing. He is a recipient of a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, Pushcart Prize, and a Whiting Writers' Award, and he has been honored by the National Endowment for the Arts, Pew Fellowship in the Arts and the Witter Bynner Foundation in conjunction with the Library of Congress. Jackson is also a professor at the University of Vermont and he is the editor of the Harvard Poetry Review.
This reading will conclude the programming for this school year, and renowned poet Billy Collins kicks off the seventh year of Verse Like Water this September.

Bemidji Library exhibit
The Bemidji Library art wall will feature wood carvings by Frank Bera. Bera's carvings are made from basswood, cottonwood bark and diamond willow. On display will be carvings of small animals, faces, walking sticks, whimsical houses and more. Bera has displayed his work at the Blackduck Carving Day. The library is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 509 America Ave NW.
Pine to Prairie Fiber Arts Trail
Wild Hare Bistro & Coffeehouse continues the Pine to Prairie Fiber Arts Trail member exhibit through the month of May, which showcases both traditional and contemporary textile art forms, including tapestry, basketry, bead and felt work as well as textile design and production. Trail members are linked by traditions such as connection to the land, self-reliance and intentional sustainability, while also fueling innovation and the resurgence of textile arts in northern Minnesota. Wild Hare is located in Bemidji.
Gallery North showcase
Gallery North will host a First Friday reception on Friday, May 4 from 2-6 p.m. for showcase artist Dawn Tracy. Tracy began sketching in her teens using charcoal and ultimately began to use watercolor, acrylic and oil mediums. Featured artist will be Gallery member Colleen Hilts. Hilts' works with fabric and creates a variety of items, including large quilts, wall hangings, table toppers, placemats, baby quilts and applique cut-out sweatshirts. Featured author will be Susan Kedzie. After working 20 years as an ecologist, Kedzie has returned to art for a career and expressive outlet. Her book, "A Thousand Purring Cats," combines her passions for art, science and kindness. Gallery North is located in Bemidji.
