The Humane Society of the Lakes' biggest annual fundraiser, Tuxes & Tails, returns to Detroit Lakes' Historic Holmes Theatre Ballroom Friday, Dec. 6, starting with a 5:30 p.m. social hour. A catered dinner and program will follow.
As has been the tradition since Tuxes & Tails first began in 2006, the highlight of the evening will come after the dinner, when roughly a dozen handlers will strut down the runway with their four-legged, fur-covered companions — each of which is a rescue dog, with some having already been adopted, and others who are still awaiting their "furever" home at the Humane Society of the Lakes (HSL) shelter, just north of Detroit Lakes on Highway 59.
As the name of the event implies, most of the handlers will be outfitted in tuxedos. But a few of them will be decked out in formal dresses, as several female handlers have been added to the lineup this year.
Guests at the fundraiser are also encouraged to don their formal wear, said Shelby Rasmussen, development coordinator for HSL, adding, "even the pups will be dressed up!"
Besides the social hour, the event will also feature live and silent auctions and a catered dinner. The silent auction will feature between 80-90 items, and will be followed by dinner at 7 p.m.
"Spanky's (Stone Hearth) is catering the meal this year, for the first time," Rasmussen said, noting that they are still putting the finishing touches on the menu.
After the runway show is over, the festivities will conclude with a live auction, featuring unique items such as a catered, six-course Italian dinner and an overnight stay in a yurt (a round tent).
There will also be games of chance during the evening, including a wine pull and an opportunity to purchase one of several "mystery boxes" — one of which contains a Furbo dog camera, Rasmussen said.
