The Laker boys cross country team picked up its first team victory of the season and Katie McConkey recorded her first individual win of the year at Arvig Park in Perham Thursday against Ottertail Central and Bertha-Hewitt.

Four of five scoring runners finished in the top 10 to lead DL to a five-point victory over Ottertail Central in the boys race. The Lakers scored 35 points led by a third place finish by John Bergum (18:51.06).

Ryan Bergum finished fifth cutting the 19-minute mark with a finish in 18:54.66.

The Bulldogs’ Isaac Scherfenber was the race medalist winning in a time of 18:09.31 holding a 32-second gap over the field. Bertha-Hewitt’s Brady Rach was the runner-up in 18:41.48.

DL’s Clint Andresen (19:02.74) placed sixth and Cole Weber was ninth (19:14.70).

Mason Hamar’s 12th place finish sealed the team victory when he crossed the line in 20:07.

McConkey finished 11 seconds ahead of a three-pack of OTC runners to win the girls race in 21:53.90.

DL and OTC split the top 10 with five finishers each, but the trio of Faith Fisher (22:05.70), Jorja Gabrielson and Ady Tysdal placing just behind McConkey was enough to seal a six-point team victory 24-30.

The Lakers’ Isla Pender and Julia Steffl finished fifth and sixth to create a three-point deficit with the next four runners left to decide the final.

OTC’s Grace VanErp took seventh and Becca Johnson ninth to post the Bulldogs’ winning 24 points.

DL’s Sadie Johnson and Karli Skarie were eighth and 10th. VanErp and Johnson were in a tight battle for seventh with VanErp finishing just 2.07 seconds in front. DL would have needed seventh and eighth place finishes from the final two runners to pull out a one-point win.

The Lakers compete next in Hawley against the host Nuggets and Perham Thursday, Sept. 24.
