Man charged with assaulting DL police officer
Dustin James Johnson, 24, of rural Bagley has been charged in Becker County District Court with felony fifth-degree assault and gross misdemeanor fourth-degree assault on a peace officer.
According to court records, on Feb. 23 a police officer was called to Casey's General Store in Detroit lakes on the report of disorderly, intoxicated man. An employee told the officer that Johnson had come into the store and started opening food items and eating them. He did not pay for them or have the money to pay for the items her consumed. He became verbally aggressive with the staff at Casey's and eventually passed out on the floor.
The officer helped Johnson into his squad car to wait for a ride to come pick him up, and while in the back seat of the squad car Johnson allegedly began kicking the back of the seat and wanted to fight the officer. The officer took him to the emergency department to clear him for jail. At the ER he was verbally aggressive with staff and wanted to leave, then he allegedly kicked the officer in the chest when he walked around the end of the bed. He was taken to jail.
Johnson appeared Feb. 26 before District Judge Gretchen Thilmony, who set bail at $400 or bond at $4,000, with conditions, or bond at $12,000 without standard conditions of release.
