Lakes Area Farmers Market seeking SNAP participants
The Lakes Area Farmers Market in Detroit Lakes, which is located in Peoples Park at 1337 Rossman Ave, is open for the season and is now accepting SNAP/EBT. Better yet, families paying with their EBT card (Electronic Benefits Transfer), can buy twice as much fresh food by receiving matching Market Bucks from Hunger Solutions. These Market Bucks are a win-win for shoppers and farmers, according to Hunger Solutions. The program helps support better health, and allows families to stretch their food dollars to buy produce they might not normally buy, all while supporting local farmers.
The program is operating this summer at 96 farmers markets across Minnesota, where it was the first state in the nation to fund a farmers market incentive program. SNAP shoppers can find not only seasonal produce, but also baked goods, eggs, locally raised meat, as well as herbs and food producing plants such as tomatoes and rhubarb.
They can purchase it all with their EBT card and matching Market Bucks. Additionally, these federal and state funds are a boost for the Detroit Lakes local economy.
SNAP customers are instructed to check in at the EBT booth to obtain tokens and matching Market Bucks. Any SNAP, WIC, Head Start, or Food Pantry participants are also invited to come to an informative one hour class on Tuesday, July 31 at 9:30. $10 will be given to each class member to spend at the market. To register, call Marilyn Hofland at (218) 639-9583. Registration is required.
