A portion of Summit Avenue was temporarily closed to traffic early Wednesday afternoon as the Detroit Lakes police and fire departments dealt with a garage fire on the 1100 block.

According to Detroit Lakes Fire Chief Scott Flynn, a two-stall garage caught fire right around 1 p.m.

"A fire started in the wood stove area of the garage, which extended into the attic and burned through the roof," Flynn said.

The street was reopened to traffic by mid-afternoon, but firefighters were at the scene for about 2½ hours, he added.
