Felony charge of ineligible voting dismissed
A felony charge of ineligible voter knowingly voting has been dismissed against Joseph Tom Bennett, 51, of Brainerd in Becker County District Court.
According to court records, he was convicted of felony motor vehicle theft on July 1, 2013 in Crow Wing County. On Sept. 10, 2013 he signed a probation agreement acknowledging that he is ineligible to vote in Minnesota until his civil rights were restored.
On Nov. 8, 2016, he voted in the general election in Audubon, even though his civil rights had not yet been restored. He admitted voting while on probation.
On March 27 the charge was dismissed in Becker County District Court because conditions had been met: He served 30 days in jail, paid a $1,000 fine plus $1,160 in court fees and complied with the requirements of supervised probation.
