Hank Fiskevold will be performing in four bands this year while completing his second year as a Music Composition major at Bemidji State University.
Fiskevold, a 2007 Detroit Lakes High School graduate, made second chair in the trumpet section of both the BSU Wind Ensemble and the BSU Jazz Band, plays trumpet with the Beaver pep band known as The Redline Swingers, and will be performing with the trumpet section for the Bemidji Symphony Orchestra.
"The Bemidji Symphony Orchestra is basically a community and college orchestra that exposes classical music to wider audiences in the Bemidji region. I saw them performing Beethoven's Seventh Symphony and Mozart's Horn Concerto last May and was impressed with their performance," Fiskevold said. "I was really honored when the symphony asked me to play with them.
"I'll be playing in their Christmas concert in December and Verdi's 'Messa da Requiem' in May. I'm really excited about playing in an orchestra, especially with the strings section."
While at DLHS, Fiskevold was a member of the Laker Jazz Band, the DLHS Symphonic Band, played for the Madrigal Dinners, and played in the pit band for three fall musicals. He has also performed with Doc and the Scrubs and the Detroit Lakes Community Concert Band. Fiskevold took piano instruction for nine years with Doc and the Scrubs pianist Ginny Klein, studied jazz technique with guitarist Tim Sparks, and had trumpet lessons from Doc and the Scrubs lead trumpet Greg Johnson.
"I'm really looking forward to performing with ensembles of four different musical genres," Fiskevold added. "The Redline Swingers will be inspiring the crowds at Beaver hockey and basketball games, the Wind Ensemble will be touring high schools in northern and central Minnesota and performing several concerts, and the BSU Jazz Band will also perform several concerts. It is going to be an exciting and diverse musical year for me."
