Minnesota Alpha Delta Kappa (ADK), an international honorary organization for women educators, will hold its annual state convention at the Holiday Inn in Detroit Lakes this coming Friday and Saturday, April 25-26.
Approximately 100 women educators are expected to attend, from all across the state of Minnesota. The central chapters of ADK sponsoring the event include: Alpha Theta, Alpha Phi, Alpha Lambda and XI.
“The state conventions are on a rotational schedule of five areas in Minnesota,” said Grace Beck, president of Alpha Theta, the Detroit Lakes chapter of ADK.
Within each area, hosting of the event is likewise rotated amongst chapters, she added - and this year was Detroit Lakes’ turn.
Alpha Theta, the local chapter of ADK, was established on Nov. 2, 1968, and currently boasts 24 members who hail from Frazee, Perham and Mahnomen as well as Detroit Lakes. The chapter will celebrate its 45th anniversary this year.

“Our chapter is one of 21 chapters in Minnesota,” Beck said. “The state of Minnesota is part of the North Central Region of seven states and provinces.”
Alpha Delta Kappa is an international honorary organization for women educators, with chapters in 50 states as well as Puerto Rico, Australia, Canada, Jamaica and Mexico. Since 1947, over 125,000 women educators from around the world have joined ADK.
To be eligible for active membership in Alpha Delta Kappa, a woman must be in the education profession for two or more years, and employed under contract in teaching, school administration or some specialized field of education.
Members must also have graduated from an accredited college or university with a degree in education and have met the requirement for teacher certification, administrative certification in a specialized field of education in the state in which she is employed.
ADK’s goal is to promote educational and charitable projects and activities, to sponsor scholarships, and to further and maintain worthy community projects relating to education and charities.
“Locally, our chapter promotes education scholarships and community programs relating to education,” said Beck.
The theme of the state convention is “Time for Tea.” The keynote address will be given by Dee Jensen of Wahpeton, N.D. Peggy Germain, Delaware, international chaplain representative, will deliver the welcome and installation from Alpha Delta Kappa International Headquarters.
Minnesota chapter members’ altruistic project at the state convention will be Camp Courage North, based on Lake George in Park Rapids. Camp Courage North serves children and adults with developmental, physical and learning disabilities each year.
