After high-speed chase, K-9 finds man in swamp

According to court records, on Sept. 1 at 2 a.m. a trooper on Highway 59 allegedly saw him driving a rented 2016 Kia Rio towards him with his high beams on.

The trooper flashed his lights three times, but Lewis never dimmed his brights.

He allegedly gave a false name to the trooper and appeared confused when asked his destination. The trooper saw a large amount of cash and Crown Royal bag in the center consol.

The trooper asked him to move his car, because it posed a traffic hazard where it was parked, and then Lewis allegedly sped away, reaching speeds of 108 mph in a 60 mph zone.

He allegedly drove around a vehicle it the intersection of Highway 59 and Highway 10 and then went southbound through a construction zone at 88 mph.

He allegedly lost control at the roundabout, crashing into a ditch and then fleeing on foot.

A K-9 unit was brought to the scene, and Lewis was allegedly found several hours later south of the crash site, in a swampy area, covered by leaves.

He was wanted for escape in Chicago.

On Sept. 2, District Judge Joe Evans set bond at $75,000 or cash bail at $8,000, with standard conditions of release. His next court appearance is set for Monday.
