GRAND FORKS, N.D. - One week after a winter storm dumped a record 12.6 inches of snowfall on Fargo-Moorhead, another winter storm is expected to hit the region today, the National Weather Service says.

A winter storm warning is in effect from noon today until noon Tuesday for the North Dakota counties of Cass, Ransom, Richland, Sargent and Traill and for most of northwestern and west-central Minnesota.

Heavy snow is expected in those areas, with a band of 6 to 10 inches forecast along and east of a line from Wahpeton, N.D., to Fosston, Minn., and Baudette, Minn., according to the weather service office in Grand Forks.

Slightly lower amounts of 4 to 6 inches are expected just west of that line, including in the Fargo-Moorhead area, and 1 to 5 inches is expected to fall across the northern Red River Valley into the Devils Lake basin and Valley City area, the weather service said.

The heaviest snowfall is expected to begin this afternoon and continue through tonight.

Northerly winds with gusts up to 40 mph will develop and continue into Tuesday morning, producing blowing and drifting snow and significantly reducing visibility, especially in open areas. Travel will be hazardous, the weather service said.

Areas west of the warning area remain under a winter weather advisory until 6 a.m. Tuesday.
