A Becker County deputy was injured when his squad car collided with a semi truck on County Road 21 Wednesday evening.

Deputy Matt Gerving, 46, of Frazee, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Essentia Health St. Mary’s Hospital. The airbag in the 2020 Ford Explorer squad car deployed, and he was wearing a seatbelt, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

The driver of the 2006 semi truck, Brian Laverne Aho, 57, of Grandin, N.D., also suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Essentia Health St. Mary’s Hospital. He was wearing a seatbelt.

The semi truck was northbound on County Road 21 (Richwood Road) making a left turn onto North Tower Road. The Ford Explorer, lights and sirens activated, was also traveling northbound and was attempting to pass the semi on the left when the vehicles made contact.

The crash was reported on dry pavement at 7:39 p.m. The Becker County Sheriff’s Office, St. Mary’s EMS, and Detroit Lakes police officers and firefighters assisted the State Patrol.
