Seventy-five Family Career and Community Leaders of America students attended a three-day training camp hoping to stop Minnesota from being No. 1 -- No. 1 in traffic fatalities among teenagers.
Chelsea Cossette and Greg Olson, members of the Lake Park Audubon FCCLA Chapter, and their advisor Cheryl Hogie attended the Families First state training to bring back positive to their school.
Speakers from around the country were brought in to share impact stories, leadership skills and teamwork activities. Keynote speaker Karen Williams, of the "Protecting You, Protecting Me" organization from Texas, shared the recent research of how alcohol adversely impacts brain development of young adults.
Representatives from MADD had a presentation panel and distributed educational resources for the chapters to use. Students worked on developing, writing and presenting speeches and networked with agencies for assistance and support in making plans for implementation in their home schools.
The LPA students are part of a Region 6 FCCLA Officer Team that will be presenting lessons to other FCCLA members at their Fall Rally on Oct. 2 in the Detroit Lakes Cultural and Community Center.
