BUFFALO, N.D. - Deputies arrested a man on suspicion of drunken driving after a train slammed into a car that was stuck on the tracks early today about two miles east of Buffalo, the Cass County Sheriff's Office said.

Deputy Matt Giddings said the driver told deputies he made a wrong turn onto the railroad tracks and headed west. When the 1992 Chrysler New Yorker got hung up on the tracks and stalled, the driver and his female passenger exited the car.

Buffalo Fire and Rescue responded just before 2 a.m. to try to remove the car.

"And before they could even get it hooked up to try and get it pulled off, they had already called in to try and get the train to stop, but due to the fact that the train was already in transit, no way it could have stopped in time," Giddings said.

The car was totaled, and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe train also sustained damage, Giddings said. BNSF crews inspected the train before allowing it to continue, he said.
