Detroit Lakes Police Sgt. Chad Glander sent out a notice to Chamber of Commerce members Dec. 31, warning businesses of a new scam going around town.

“We have reports of several businesses receiving calls from scammers threatening to shut the power down to their businesses if they do not send “Green Dot” pre-paid Visa cards to the scammers,” he wrote.

“The calls are coming from ‘800’ numbers. We have confirmed with Detroit Lakes Public Utilities that these types of calls are not legitimate.

“My best advice would be to simply hang up the phone and not play into the scam.”
