Concentration, intricate details, colored beads and of course, laughter. Those are just a few of the things the organizers of the fall retreat for caregivers were experiencing when prepping for the upcoming event.

Struggling at times to create an angel made of beads and wire, the ladies were on the floor looking for beads, commenting on the pains of bifocals and trying to get two wings to look similar. And all the while, laughter could be heard.

"I made a wing! I did it!" Those were the shouts of joy heard around the room while attempting the angel making process.

This year's fall retreat for caregivers is Thursday, Sept. 25, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Smokey Hills Wilderness Retreat near Osage. The Beads of Wisdom and Celebration of Light-themed retreat is free for all caregivers in Becker County who provide support for a loved one.

"It's about God's many gifts, not only angels. Caregivers are like our angels on earth," Bonnie Juma explained the theme behind this year's retreat.

The red bead in the center of the angels symbolizes the heart, "the pace from where compassion comes from," Juma added.

Once caregivers complete the already started angels of beads, there will be a pinning ceremony during the day, acknowledging the caregivers.

The day is packed with other relaxing activities for caregivers as well. A bus will take the participants to Smokey Hills Wilderness Retreat, where they will be treated to a presentation on "What does a healthy caregiver look like?" and lunch. There will also be a celebration of light, nature walks, a blessing ceremony and humor presentation from Vicki Marthaler and Juma.

"The fellowship is awesome. They form friendships," Judy Peterson said of the caregivers' past trips.

"There's nothing better than knowing someone else who's going through it," added Sue Braun.

There is no fee for the trip, but RSVP is required by Sept. 18 to Judy Peterson at 844-7140 or via e-mail: judypeterson@ecumen.org .

Respite care is available as well, with reservations due by Sept. 15.
