The 2008 Mutt Strut Dog Walk & Expo to benefit the Humane Society of the Lakes begins today with registration from 1-2 p.m., followed by the Mutt Strut at 2 and awards at 3 in the DL City Park. 20 vendors will be on display. Pledge forms are available at www.HSoftheLakes.org or it is a $25 donation registration.

The Rising Sun Dancers host a square dance from 2 to 4:30 p.m. today in the Waubun Community Center. Tips will be by Larry Johansen with live music. Lunch will be served. All dancers and spectators are welcome.

Tamarac Wildlife Refuge presents the movie "El Lobo, the Song of the Wolf" at 2 p.m. today in the visitor's center. Learn about the gray wolf's cousin, the Mexican Gray wolf, and its struggle for survival in the SW. See how the USFWS's captive program shows promise in the recovery of this species. The DL Library offers a free computer class for quilting information from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 23. If you have knowledge of the Internet and an intermediate level of computer expertise, this class is for you. We will locate quilting resources on the Internet and learn to print and save quilting patterns. Computer classes are free and open to the public, but space is limited. The Detroit Lakes Library hosts a computer beginning genealogy class from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26. This class will explore ways to find information be-yond births, deaths, and mar-riages. The Sandbarr II will host a performance by popular country band 32 Below at the Detroit Lakes Pavilion on Friday, Sept. 26, from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Tickets are now available for 'The USO Show' on Saturday, Sept. 27 at the ITOW Veterans Museum in Perham. This year's annual banquet for the Friends of the History Museum of East Otter Tail County will be a nostalgic journey back in time with a popular re-enactment of the classic USO Show. The banquet will begin with a social hour at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m., followed by 'The USO Show.' After the show there will be dancing in the 'canteen' until 11 p.m. Drinks will be served by the East Otter Tail Historical Society. Tickets are $15 per person. An exhibit of "Works in Various Media" by Detroit Lakes artist Linda Doebbert will be on display in the main meeting room through Sept. 30 at the Detroit Lakes Public Library, and examples of handmade book styles by Linda Doebbert will also be on exhibit in the library's upstairs reading room. Local artist Robert J Cummings has original paintings on display for the month of September at Flowers by Val, downtown Detroit Lakes. A native of Frazee, Bob specializes in giving great attention to detail while creating his beautiful, scenic oil paintings.

The Detroit Lakes Community and Cultural Center is now taking registrations for the 2008-09 DLCCC After School Program. The program allows students in grades K-6 to get a balance of the arts and physical activity. Activities will include arts-related workshops such as acting, dance, glass making, clowning and theatre tech, as well as gym and swim time and sports clinics. The program is available throughout the school year, Monday through Friday, 3:45 p.m.-5:30 p.m. The cost is $5 per day, per child with a two day per week commitment. A new exhibit about Butler Township, created specifically for Butler's recent 125th anniversary celebration, is now on display at the History Museum of East Otter Tail County in Perham. Photographs and stories about the township will be on display through the end of the year. On May 1, 1960, Captain Francis Gary Powers was shot down over the Soviet Union while piloting his U2 spy plane sparking one of the most famous international incidents of the Cold War. The latest exhibit at the In Their Own Words (ITOW) Veterans Museum, "Top Secret," which opened May 1 and continues through Oct. 31, includes photographs and artifacts from the Cold War Museum about the U-2 Incident. The Becker County Historical Society is happy to announce extended museum hours this fall. Starting in September, the Becker County Museum & Research Library will be open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., with extended hours on Thursdays 10 a.m.-6 p.m. The museum is located at 714 Summit Ave., next to the DL Community & Cultural Center.
