Court report: Perham man sentenced for sucker punch that broke man’s jaw in Detroit Lakes

JaQuinn Charles David Henderson, 21, of Perham was sentenced in Becker County District Court for felony third-degree assault.

According to court records, on Sept. 26 he was involved in an altercation at the Northside Bar in Detroit Lakes. He and another man exchanged words, which escalated to pushing and to punches being thrown as the two left the bar. Their fight outside was broken up by another bar patron.

After that, the two were standing about 20 feet away from each other and Henderson ran over and punched the other man in the face when he wasn’t looking, according to bar video footage. The man required surgery for a broken jaw.

Henderson appeared in court Jan. 15 before District Judge Jay Carlson, who stayed imposition of sentence and placed him on supervised probation for five years.

He was ordered to pay a $1,000 fine and $1,165 in court fees, with restitution reserved, and to serve 33 days in jail, with credit for 33 days served.

He was ordered to get a chemical dependency evaluation and follow the recommendations, including aftercare.

Danielle Nicole Abendano, 33, of Fargo was sentenced in Becker County District Court for felony check forgery.

According to court records, on July 8 officers responded to a report that Abendano had cashed a check for $364 at the Midwest Bank drive-through in Detroit Lakes, made out to her from Paymasters Inc.

The "check" was actually a payroll stub for an electronic deposit, with the word “void” bleached out and the amount written in by hand. The teller that processed the check knew her and recognized her as a backseat passenger of the vehicle that had gone through the bank’s drive through, according to the criminal complaint.

Abendano told officers that the money was not directly used to buy meth, but that meth use had affected her judgment.

She appeared in court Jan. 15 before District Judge Jay Carlson, who sentenced her to a year and a day in prison in Shakopee, stayed five years. She was ordered to pay a $1,000 fine and $1,165 in court fees, with restitution reserved, and to serve 65 days in jail, with credit for 65 days served.

A chemical dependency evaluation has already been done, and she was ordered into chemical dependency treatment following her jail time, and placed on supervised probation for five years.

Katrina Marie Ewald, 38, of rural Fergus Falls was sentenced in Becker County District Court for felony possession of shoplifting gear.

According to court records, on April 9, 2018, she walked into the Detroit Lakes Walmart with a reusable Walmart shopping bag. She put $157 worth of merchandise into the bag and left the store without paying. The Walmart shopping bag was the shoplifting tool that brought the felony charge. The incident was captured on store surveillance video.

She was previously convicted of felony theft by swindle and felony aggravated forgery in Otter Tail County.

Ewald appeared in court Jan. 15 before District Judge Jay Carlson, who sentenced her to 13 months in prison in Shakopee, stayed four years. She was ordered to pay a $300 fine and $390 in court fees, with restitution reserved, and to serve 22 days in jail, with credit for 22 days served.

A misdemeanor theft charge was dropped in a plea agreement. She was placed on supervised probation for four years.

John Florian Keidel, 43, of Lake Park was sentenced in Becker County District Court for felony DWI.

According to court records, on Aug. 12 at 6 p.m. a trooper pulled his vehicle over on Highway 34 in Becker County for having illegally-tinted windows. He had a restricted driver’s license that invalidated his license upon any use of alcohol.

Speaking to him, the trooper could smell a strong odor of alcohol and saw several crushed beer cans on the floor of the vehicle. Keidel had slurred speech and bloodshot eyes and failed field sobriety tests. Asked to take a breath test, he complained of breathing problems and requested to be tested by blood draw instead. He was taken to the hospital, where a blood sample was drawn for testing. He has four prior DWI-related convictions from 1998, 2000, 2003 and 2006.

Keidel appeared in court Jan. 15 before District Judge Jay Carlson, who sentenced him to 42 months in prison at St. Cloud, stayed seven years.

He was ordered to pay a $1,000 fine and $1,195 in court fees, and to serve 30 days in jail, with credit for 30 days served. He was ordered to serve 30 days on electronic home monitoring immediately after his release from jail, using remote electronic alcohol monitoring.

He was ordered to complete the DWI Court program, and follow all recommendations of his chemical dependency evaluation, including aftercare. He was placed on supervised probation for seven years, and must submit to 30 days of remote electronic alcohol monitoring for each year he is on probation.

Molly Joy Krengell, 21, of Detroit Lakes was sentenced in Becker County District Court for felony third-degree assault. A felony charge of aggravated assault was dropped in a plea agreement.

According to court records, she was one of several people that badly beat a man in a Detroit Lakes parking lot at about 3:30 a.m. on March 9, 2019.

Krengel asked the victim (her boyfriend) to meet her at the parking lot. While the two spoke, a vehicle driven by a man pulled up and three people got out. One man approached the victim and hit him, starting a fight.

As the two were fighting, another man joined in, punching the victim in the jaw a half-dozen times.

As the victim was being assaulted by the two men, Krengel and another woman joined the fight, with the woman kicking the victim in the mouth and head multiple times and Krengell throwing a full can of beer at him as he lay on the ground after the beating. She was also involved in kicking and beating him, according to the criminal complaint.

Afterwards, the victim walked to a nearby house, called 911, and was taken to the emergency room for treatment. He was “severely injured,” according to the complaint, with a large bulge on his forehead, a bloody mouth and red marks across his face.

Following the assault, Krengel sent a text message to the victim reading: “Whatever happens to u, u got what u deserved.” She admitted having the victim come to the parking lot knowing he would be beaten up.

Krengell appeared in court Jan. 21 before District Judge Gretchen Thilmony, who stayed adjudication and continued the case.

She was ordered to serve 30 days in jail, half in jail and half on electronic home monitoring at her own expense. Credit was granted for four days served.

She was fined $500 plus $575 in court fees, and was ordered to get a chemical dependency evaluation and follow the recommendations, including aftercare.

Joseph Charles Thompson, 32, of rural Callaway was sentenced in Becker County District Court for felony charge of fifth-degree controlled substance crime.

According to court records, on Oct. 9 a Detroit Lakes police officer, who knew his license was revoked, saw him driving a gray 2006 Chevy Uplander. The officer smelled burned marijuana, searched the vehicle, and found a quarter-gram of meth, a half-gram of marijuana wax, and 8 grams of marijuana.

Thompson appeared in court Jan. 21 before District Judge Gretchen Thilmony, who stayed adjudication and continued the case.

He was ordered to serve 43 days in jail, with credit for 43 days served. He was ordered to pay $665 in court fees, and to get a chemical dependency evaluation and follow the recommendations, including aftercare.

A second felony charge of fifth-degree controlled substance crime and misdemeanor charges of DWI, driving after revocation and uninsured driving were all dropped in a plea agreement.
