A Red Lake woman was sentenced in Becker County Court for bringing an empty purse into Walmart and filling it up with stolen goods.
Cheree Marie Cobenais, 27, was arrested on Oct. 4 after police were called to the Detroit Lakes Walmart on a report of an uncooperative shoplifter.
According to a report filed with Becker County District Court, Cobenais was observed putting items into her purse and then leaving.
When she was approached by Walmart employees in the parking lot, she first attempted to run, but then went back towards the front of the store.
When police arrived, they found $262.25 worth of stolen merchandise in her purse, which was empty besides the stolen items. She told police her boyfriend gave her the purse for the purpose of stealing merchandise.
Cobenais has also been caught stealing from the Walmarts in Bemidji and Thief River Falls.
She was sentenced to 30 days in jail with 13 days credit for time served and four years of probation. She was also granted a stay of imposition, which means if she adheres to her terms of probation, the felony will not go on her record.
