John Michael L. Duel, 26, of Dilworth has been sentenced in Becker County District Court for felony domestic assault. A second felony charge of domestic assault, and a felony stalking charge, were dismissed in a plea agreement.
According to court records, on Nov. 4, 2018 police were called to a Frazee residence, where a woman had received a split lip.
The woman and Duel had been drinking together when Duel grabbed her face and held her mouth shut so tight that it split her lip. Duel kept saying he was going to kill her, and she believed he was going to kill her, according to the criminal complaint. She got her phone and called her mother. Duel left the residence because the police were coming, according to court documents.
Duel has four prior domestic abuse-related convictions.
He appeared in court Aug. 5 before District Judge Gretchen Thilmony, who sentenced him to 18 months in prison at St. Cloud, stayed five years. Duel was ordered to serve 41 days in jail, with credit for 41 days served, and must pay a $1,000 fine plus $1,165 in court fees.
He was ordered to get domestic abuse and chemical dependency evaluations and follow the recommendations, including aftercare, and was placed on supervised probation for five years.
