Christopher Lee Peake, 31, of Ponsford has been charged in Becker County District Court with felony violating a restraining order within 10 years of the first of two or more domestic abuse convictions.

According to court records, on July 17, Peake was sentenced on a felony charge of domestic assault by strangulation. A domestic abuse restraining order was issued to protect the victim.

The order remained in effect a month later, on Aug. 17, when a Detroit Lakes police officer was called to a residence, found the victim there and learned from a witness that Peake was also there, possibly hiding in a closet.

The officer searched the residence and found Peake trying to hide. According to the criminal complaint, he told the officer he was hiding because of the “order for protection” against him, and said he was there to watch the children in the morning.

Peake appeared in court Aug. 19 before District Judge Gretchen Thilmony, who set cash bail at $1,000 or bond at $20,000, with standard conditions of release, or bond at $40,000 with no conditions of release.
