Steven Joseph Morris, 38, of Cozy Cove Road, rural Detroit Lakes, was sentenced in Becker County District Court for felony fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle.

According to court records, at 12:35 a.m. on June 23, 2018, a Callaway police officer saw an obviously intoxicated man-later identified as Morris-leave the Callaway Liquor Store. He got on his 2016 Polaris Ranger side-by-side utility vehicle and drove away, swerving violently at times, fleeing down country roads with the officer pursuing at speeds of 40-49 mph. He eventually escaped over a planted soybean field and was later identified via surveillance video.

Morris appeared in court June 13 before District Judge Gretchen Thilmony, who stayed adjudication and continued the case.

He was ordered to serve 30 days in jail, followed by 30 days on electronic home monitoring. Work release privileges were granted. He was ordered to get a chemical dependency evaluation, and follow the recommendations, and was placed on supervised probation for four years.
