Stephen Andrew Bergeron, 36, of Detroit Lakes was sentenced in Becker County District Court for felony mail theft.
According to court records, on Nov. 24 a Detroit Lakes police officer responded to a report of a man stealing mail from residential mailboxes. A witness said she had watched the man walk down the street going from mailbox to mailbox. When the officer found him walking down the street and asked him if he had any mail on him, Bergeron replied that he had found some mail by a bush.
Two Amazon packages, prescribed Methotrexate pills (used to treat cancer and other diseases) and numerous other envelopes were found in his possession, all with Detroit Lakes addresses.
On Aug. 23 Bergeron appeared before District Judge Grethen Thilmony, who stayed imposition of sentence and ordered him to serve 30 days in jail, with credit for seven days served. He was fined $1,000 plus $1,165 in court fees, and was placed on supervised probation for four years.
Bergeron was also sentenced on a misdemeanor theft charge to 90 days in jail, with credit for four days served. He was ordered to pay a $400 fine and $565 in court fees, and was placed on unsupervised probation for one year.
