Crime and fire report: Barn fire in Callaway; catalytic converter stolen from vehicle at Detroit Lakes car dealership

On Thursday, July 22 at 11:58 a.m., on the 28000 block of County Road 21, Callaway, a hay barn caught on fire. No injuries were reported. Firefighters from Callaway, Audubon, Detroit Lakes, Frazee, Ogema and White Earth battled the blaze for nearly five hours before finally extinguishing it. Also, at 3:40 p.m., at Nereson Chevrolet at 923 Highway 10, Detroit Lakes, a catalytic converter was stolen off of a 2020 GMC Sierra 2500 pickup truck which was parked at the dealership.

Thursday, July 22

10:52 a.m., 29000 block County Road 34, Callaway, phone scam. Caller gave the last four of their social security number and their name. The scammer requested their credit card information, but the caller refused.

11:52 a.m., 100 block east Main Avenue, Frazee, illegal dumping.

11:58 a.m., 28000 block County Road 21, Callaway, hay barn fire. Mutual aid from neighboring communities was called for to help battle the blaze. Callaway, Audubon, Detroit Lakes, Frazee, Ogema and White Earth firefighters responded. Fire extinguished after nearly five hours. No injuries reported.

3:40 p.m., at Nereson Chevrolet at 923 Highway 10, Detroit Lakes, a catalytic converter was stolen off a 2020 GMC Sierra 2500 that was parked in the car lot.

6:54 p.m., 14000 block Leisure Lane, Lake Park, possible contractor fraud. A crew of contractors in a truck with out-of-state plates quoted a 79-year-old Lake Park woman $350 to blacktop her driveway. The contractors are now demanding nearly $10,000 and said the woman misunderstood the quote and that the job was $350 per yard of blacktop. A civil lawsuit may be filed in the case.

11:15 p.m., 100 block west Birch Avenue, Frazee, a vehicle drove over the retaining wall. No injuries.

Friday, July 23

7:16 a.m., at Central Market at 310 east Frazee Street, Detroit Lakes, shoplifting.

10:24 a.m., 1100 block Summit Avenue, Detroit Lakes, a “defend the blue” yard sign stolen.

2:55 p.m., 43000 block County Road 56, Frazee, vehicle struck two mailboxes and multiple small trees causing damage.

4:53 p.m., 55000 block 145th Street, Menahga, father and son involved in a physical domestic. No medical attention needed. No arrests made; under investigation.

5:48 p.m., 36000 block Mission Road, Ogema, attempted credit card fraud. Without authorization, someone tried to open up multiple credit cards using the caller’s personal information.

6:46 p.m., 30000 block south Sugar Bush Road, Ogema, multiple campers burglarized. Multiple firearms and all-terrain vehicles stolen. Caller will make a list of the stolen items.

8:31 p.m., 34000 block 336th Avenue, Ogema, multiple items and a vehicle stolen. The case is being handled by the White Earth Police Department.

Saturday, July 24

1:09 a.m., near Carefree Land and County Road 54, Frazee, tree on fire next to a residence. Frazee firefighters extinguished the blaze.

9:35 a.m., 11000 County Road 2, Pelican Rapids, hay bale on fire.

12:55 p.m., 100 block Eagle Drive, Ogema, unauthorized check written on the caller’s account.

2:42 p.m., at Walmart at 1583 Highway 10, Detroit Lakes, shoplifting.

3:31 p.m., near County Road 67 and County Road 8, Frazee, milk truck rollover in single vehicle crash. Case was transferred to the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office.

7:42 p.m., 1100 block Washington Avenue, Detroit Lakes, vehicle drove through a new Fresh Seal coating in a parking lot causing damage.

10:33 p.m., 1200 block 8th Street, Detroit Lakes, fireworks.

Sunday, July 25

6:58 a.m., near County Road 7 and County Road 14, Becker County, single vehicle rollover crash. The driver said they swerved to avoid hitting a deer. They also sought medical treatment for a hand injury the following day.

11:23 a.m., near County Road 143 and Two Island Lake, Callaway, single vehicle accident. Driver fell asleep while driving. Two were injured and transported to a nearby medical clinic.

2:51 p.m., 48000 block 110th Street, Menahga, phone scam involving photos sent over the internet. Scammer was trying to extort the caller into giving money to prevent release of the photos.

5:01 p.m., near Leaf Lake, Lake Park, multiple violations of boats not displaying valid registration.

8:29 p.m., 46000 block Shinab Trail, Ponsford, escape reported at the Northwest Juvenile Center; under investigation.
