A Detroit Lakes man was sentenced for felony theft after he stole a car from downtown Detroit Lakes, then the gas to make it to the Twin Cities.
Kyle Allen Rusness, 31, was sentenced to 17 months in prison, stayed for five years. He will instead spend three months in jail and pay roughly $2,500 in fees.
According to the complaint filed with Becker County District Court, a Bloomington police officer using an automated license plate reader found a vehicle in a parking lot of a hotel there that came up stolen out of Becker County.
When Rusness came out of the hotel, the officer questioned him on it, at which time he reportedly admitted to stealing the car as it was parked on Washington Avenue in Detroit Lakes.
He also admitted to driving it to Fergus Falls, where he put gas into the car and drove off without paying.

The owner of the vehicle identified the car, which exceeded $5,000.
