A Detroit Lakes man has been convicted and sentenced in Becker County District Court on a felony charge of motor vehicle theft.

Jeffrey Scott Gunderson, 20, of 339 Oak St., Detroit Lakes, was sentenced to 15 months in prison, stayed on conditions including completion of a 90-day jail sentence, up to five years of supervised probation and community service in lieu of $1,160 in court fines and fees.

A misdemeanor count of driving after license revocation was dismissed at sentencing.

Gunderson was accused of “borrowing” a van belonging to a Detroit Lakes plumbing and heating business on Nov. 27. The van was stopped outside Callaway on Nov. 27 because it had no working tail lights; Gunderson pretended to be out on a service call at the casino in Mahnomen.

But after it was discovered that he had a revoked license, the investigating officer called the plumbing business; the owner said there was no one out on service calls at that time, and he did not know Gunderson.

Gunderson said that he had eventually planned to return the vehicle to where he had found it.
