DL matmen move up in section

The Detroit Lakes wrestling team gained an upper leg on the Section 7-2A competition with a sweep in Bagley of Thief River Falls and Fosston/Bagley Thursday.

The Detroit Lakes wrestling team gained an upper leg on the Section 7-2A competition with a sweep in Bagley of Thief River Falls and Fosston/Bagley Thursday.

The Lakers picked up an important 30-28 triumph over the Prowlers, while downing an undermanned F/B squad 51-21. The wins poke DL's head above .500 at 10-9.

"We wrestled more consistent and gained a nice win over Thief River Falls," said DL head coach Rob Ullyott. "Right now we are sitting anywhere from a third to seventh seed in the section team tournament and this win helped us.

"If we can have a good week next week and beat Long Prairie (Tuesday in the Bertha-Hewitt triangular), we should be on the shorter side of that (seeding) mark."

The Lakers tipped the scales their way in the 112 and 125-pound bouts. Jake Stalberger downed Jordan Lagden 5-3 in a close win, while Justin Horne won a major decision 11-3.

Horne is rated No. 6 in the Class 2A. Other rated Lakers included Brent Eidenschink No. 2 at 215 and Mike Griffin No. 10 at 160.

Alex Feldt also picked up a crucial win at 135, taking a 5-0 decision over Mike Kalionoski.

DL heavyweight Jon Tolbert went toe-to-toe with the state's top-ranked Andrew Peralta, before succumbing 4-0.

Those Lakers taking pins included James Rogers at 119, Alex Bosch at 152 and Griffin at 160.

DL dominated Fosston/Bagley, with Rogers, Feldt, Tolbert and Eidenschink winning by falls.

The Section 7-2A team tournament is Feb. 18, at Minnewaska. The section individual tournament is Feb. 24-25.

Perham and Little Falls will be looking to gain the top two seeds, while the rest are up for grabs, according to Ullyott.
