DLMS honor band students to perform

Detroit Lakes Middle School band students Charlie Smith, Nathan Haverkamp and Melody Peterson have been selected to perform with the 2006 Middle Level All-State Honor Band.

Detroit Lakes Middle School band students Charlie Smith, Nathan Haverkamp and Melody Peterson have been selected to perform with the 2006 Middle Level All-State Honor Band.

Smith, an eighth grader, and a consecutive year repeat member of the All-State Band, will join a clarinet section of 16. Haverkamp, also an eighth grader, is one of two selected on tuba. Peterson, a seventh grader, will join a six-player section of French horns.

The band, which includes 74 elite members, was chosen from hundreds of auditioning students in grades 6-8 statewide.

To earn membership into the Minnesota All State Band, auditioning students and their director are required to prepare an audition tape that includes several scales in various key signatures and articulations, a chromatic scale demonstrating the full range of capability, and two etudes of contrasting style.

All students auditioning are required to perform the same literature.

The three DLMS students will rehearse and perform with the group on Feb. 25-26 in the auditorium at Wayzata High School, as part of the Minnesota Music Educators' extended convention.

The event is sponsored by the Minnesota Band Director's Association. The mission of MBDA is to foster student and teacher development, and support band programs throughout Minnesota.

The State Honor Band is in its 10th year; with Smith's, Haverkamp's and Peterson's participation, DLMS bands have sent a total of 20 students to take part in the event since its inception.
