Detroit Lakes High School seniors were served their graduation caps and gowns through their vehicle windows in an unprecedented drive-thru celebration Thursday, April 9. Cars and trucks carrying students and parents were lined up outside the school's main entrance between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
More than a dozen teachers and other school staff were there to cheer on the graduating class of 2020, waving signs and dancing to music playing over a loudspeaker. They greeted the students with smiles and words of encouragement to show their support during this era of isolation and distance learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
While Detroit Lakes High School is still hoping to hold a traditional commencement ceremony on May 17, those plans are shaky as social distancing orders could be extended at any time. Currently, schools are closed and students are distance learning from home until May 4.
