Minnesota Connections Academy, a tuition-free, public online school based in St. Paul, Minn., recently announced that there were five lakes area students amongst its graduates this spring.
Local MCA graduates include Griffin Cervenka, Audubon; Evelyn Erickson, Detroit Lakes; Kailey Kools, Detroit Lakes; Brie Moldenhauer, Detroit Lakes; and Julia Johnson, Frazee.
“The faculty and staff at Minnesota Connections Academy are so proud of this year’s graduates for their hard work and we admire their determination and perseverance during a very challenging time,” said Minnesota Connections Academy Principal Melissa Gould. “These students came to our school in search of a learning environment that met their individual needs, and we know that when given the opportunity to learn in a way that works best for them, they thrive. Our Class of 2021 is ready to move on with the skills they learned to take on whatever challenges lie ahead.”
The Class of 2021 is the 13th graduating class for the experienced virtual school that serves students in grades K–12.
Smith graduates from University of Nebraska
Katherine Marie Smith of Detroit Lakes was among 3,512 graduates who received degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln during commencement exercises held on Friday and Saturday, May 7-8.
Smith earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts.
The graduating class was from 58 countries, 43 states and the District of Columbia, and more than 250 Nebraska communities.
The May exercises were the first time since December 2019 — before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic — that the university held full-fledged commencement ceremonies in person. To ensure the safety of graduates and their guests, face coverings were required at the commencement venues; seating was socially distanced; and all participating faculty, staff, volunteers and graduates had to test negative for COVID-19 in the days leading up to the ceremonies.

Frazee student earns dean's list honors at Iowa State
Chelsea Ann Samuelson, Frazee, was among those Iowa State University students recognized for outstanding academic achievement by being named to the spring semester 2021 dean's list.
Samuelson is a sophomore at the university, studying veterinary medicine. Students named to the ISU dean's list must have earned a grade point average of at least 3.5, on a 4.0 scale, while carrying a minimum of 12 credit hours of graded coursework. Iowa State University is located in Ames, Iowa.
Audubon student named to dean's list at UW-Madison
Chloe Leno, Audubon, was among those students named to the dean's list for academic achievement at the University of Wisconsin-Madison's College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) during spring semester 2021.
To be eligible for the dean's list, CALS students must achieve at least a 3.5 grade point average or above (on a 4.0 scale) and complete a minimum of 12 graded degree credits during the semester.
Detroit Lakes student earns $6,000 scholarship from NDSU
Caleb Splonskowski, son of Luke and Jennifer Splonskowski, Detroit Lakes, has received North Dakota State University's Provost Award, in the amount of $6,000.
The Provost Award recognizes students who scored a 25 to 28 on the ACT and had a 3.5 or higher high school grade point average. Splonskowski will enter NDSU in the fall and plans to major in landscape architecture.

All M State students are required to complete a minimum of six college-level credits and 75 percent of the courses in which they enrolled for the semester to be eligible for academic honors. To be named to the dean's list, students must earn a grade point average (GPA) between 3.5-3.99 (on a 4.0 scale), while students named to the president's list must earn a GPA of 4.0 for the semester.
Two local residents named to dean's list at Alexandria Tech

Ethan Anderson, Detroit Lakes, and Alan Lubbers, Lake Park, were honored for maintaining a grade point average of 3.5 or higher during the semester.
Three local students earn academic honors at St. Cloud State
St. Cloud State University has announced the names of more than 1,100 students whose academic achievement placed them on the 2021 spring semester dean's list.
Local students who achieved this honor included Sydney Gulon, Kendra Jenson and Makayla Zimmerman, all of Detroit Lakes.
To be eligible for dean's list honors at SCSU, students must maintain a grade point average of 3.75 or higher (on a 4.0 scale) for the semester.
