Lakes area students named to dean's list at SDSU

Several lakes area students were named to the dean's list for academic excellence after the spring 2021 semester at South Dakota State University in Brookings.

Among those local students earning dean's list honors were: Sara E. Freeman, Detroit Lakes; Mary Eleanor Nelmark, Frazee; and Haylee Renee Hovanec, Lake Park.

To earn dean's list distinctions in SDSU's colleges, students must have completed a minimum of 12 credits and must have earned at least a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. Students with an asterisk after their names received a perfect 4.0 GPA.

Overall, nearly 3,200 students from 35 states and 30 foreign nations were named to the list. More than 1,350 students received a 4.0.

Local students named to BSU president's list

Several local students have been placed on the president's honor roll for academic achievement during the spring 2021 semester at Bemidji State University.

Those who achieved this honor were:

  • Mikhail Usovich and Kari Wendt, both of Detroit Lakes;
  • Megan Danielson and Arron Erickson, both of Frazee;
  • Trevor Loberg, Lake Park.

To be eligible for the president's honor roll, BSU students must be enrolled for at least 12 credits and earn a perfect 4.0 grade point average during the semester.

Detroit Lakes student earns dean's list honors at Wheaton

Abigeil Doci of Detroit Lakes was among those students at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill., who were named to the dean's list for their academic achievements during spring semester 2021.

To earn dean's list honors at Wheaton, an undergraduate student must carry 12 or more credit hours and achieve a 3.5 grade point average or higher on a 4.0 scale.

DL's Sundseth graduates from SCSU

Katherine Sundseth, Detroit Lakes, was among those 950 students who graduated from St. Cloud State University at the end of the spring semester.

Sundseth earned an Associate of Arts (i.e., two-year) degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences.

UND students from lakes area honored for achievements

The University of North Dakota in Grand Forks has honored several lakes area students for their academic achievements during spring semester 2021.

Among those local students who were named to the dean's list were:

  • Taylor Prussia, Audubon;
  • Sydney Brininger, Caitlin Collins, Max Gunderson, Morgan Mastrud and Ellie Morgan, all of Detroit Lakes;

  • Isaac Benson, Waubun.

The UND dean’s list comprises students whose grade point average are in the top 15% of the enrollment in each of the University's degree granting colleges and schools. A student must have completed no fewer than 12 semester hours of academic work for the semester, of which eight or more hours must be graded work rather than "satisfactory/unsatisfactory."

Local students named to the UND president's roll of honor included:

  • Laura Prussia and Taylor Prussia, both of Audubon;
  • Sydney Brininger and Max Gunderson, both of Detroit Lakes;

  • Brianne Huesman, Rochert;

  • Isaac Benson, Trenten Johnson and Logan Pazdernik, all of Waubun.

To qualify for the UND president's roll of honor, a student must have an overall cumulative GPA of 3.8 or higher. The student must also have earned a minimum of 30 semester hours and have completed a minimum of 12 hours at the close of the semester, eight of which must be for traditional letter grades.

DL's Engel earns doctorate from Iowa State

Kelsey Engel, Detroit Lakes, was among 802 graduates at Iowa State University to receive their degrees this summer.

Engel earned her doctorate in philosophy and psychology. Students earning degrees from ISU have the opportunity to participate in fall or spring commencement ceremonies on the university campus in Ames, Iowa.

Two local students graduate at Central Lakes

Allen Bergquist and Wayne Willette, both of Detroit Lakes, were among those graduating from Central Lakes College at the conclusion of the 2020-21 academic year.

Both Bergquist and Willette graduated with high honors, with each receiving a certificate for completing the Essentials of Farm Business Management program. High honors are awarded to those students who achieved a grade point average of 3.75-4.0 (on a 4.0 scale).

Central Lakes College is comprehensive community and technical college with campuses in Brainerd and Staples, Minn.

Several area students earn Sister Anne scholarships from Essentia

Essentia Health St. Mary’s has announced their 2021 winners of the Sister Anne Scholarship.

Scholarships of $500 each were awarded to four individuals pursuing health care careers:

  • Brenna Behrens, Park Rapids, attending the College of St. Benedict in pursuit of her nursing and pre-physician assistant education;
  • Carter Mosher, Detroit Lakes, attending the University of Mary in pursuit of a Doctor of Nursing practice degree;
  • Julia Vetter, Vergas, attending the University of Mary in pursuit of a nursing degree;
  • Kristina Eiter, Lake Park, attending M State in pursuit of a radiology technician degree.

The annual scholarship was established in memory of Sister Anne Goulet, to encourage students' undergraduate academic pursuits for a clinical career in health care.
