ROLLAG, Minn. - An 87-year-old woman is dead in northwestern Minnesota after her vehicle went off the roadway and into open water.

The Minnesota State Patrol says Eileen Johnson, 87, of Pelican Rapids, died at the scene inside the submerged vehicle.

The vehicle she was a passenger in was traveling south on Highway 32 about two miles north of here when it left the roadway just after 5:30 p.m. Friday and went underwater, the patrol said.

The driver, her husband Ervin Johnson, 83, was transported to Sanford Health in Fargo to be treated for hypothermia, the patrol said. A house administrator for Sanford said at 10:30 p.m. that Ervin Johnson had been treated and released.

Sgt. Jesse Grabow says there were patches of ice and packed snow on the roadway at the time, but authorities are investigating if weather was a factor. He says it was not snowing at the time of the crash.

The patrol reported that both were wearing their seatbelts and alcohol did not appear to be a factor.
