The second day of spring brought winter-like conditions back to the region, dumping up to 5.5 inches of snow on Fargo and more than 1 foot on Sisseton, S.D., according to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, N.D.
The weather service received reports of 4 to 5½ inches of snow in the Fargo area. An official total is expected later today.
"It's fairly wet, heavy snow. It's good for making snowballs," said John Hoppes, weather service meteorologist.
Snowplows were out trying to clear the heavy snow, which created slippery driving conditions, especially at intersections.
"We've got some anti-ice (chemical) down there, hoping we can get rid of this really quick," Fargo Public Works Operations Manager Al Weigel said.

The weather service received reports of 7 inches of snow in Lidgerwood and 6 inches in Lisbon and Forman. Areas to the north received lighter amounts, with Grand Forks getting only 0.3 inches as of 7 a.m.
In South Dakota, 12.4 inches of snow fell in Sisseton and 9.5 inches in Aberdeen.
More snow is expected in the Fargo area today and Saturday.
"We're still looking for a little bit of snow here this afternoon, tonight and tomorrow, but any totals through tomorrow will probably be an inch or two," Hoppes said.
Area sheriff's dispatchers reported cars in the ditch but no serious injuries.
The Minnesota State Patrol said icy roads and snow fog caused by a passing semi were factors in a one-vehicle accident at 3:10 a.m. today on Interstate 94 at Fergus Falls. Three people received minor injuries when their car hit the ditch.
