Update: A house fire was reported at approximately 1:30 p.m. Thursday at a residence on the 300 block of Bowling Avenue in Detroit Lakes.

Firefighters were dispatched to the scene, where they found the main level of the home engulfed in flames, according to Fire Chief Scott Flynn.

“It’s a total loss,” Flynn said of the residence at 311 Bowling Avenue.

Two women inside the home were able to escape without injury; they were taken to Essentia Health St. Mary’s for treatment of smoke inhalation “as a precaution,” Flynn said, noting that neither of them sustained injuries during the incident.

Two dogs inside the home were able to escape the blaze without injury; the whereabouts of a cat that was also living at the residence are currently unknown.

“We’re still looking for the cat,” Flynn said late Thursday afternoon, noting that it was unknown whether the animal had escaped or not.

The Detroit Lakes Fire Department was still on the scene as of 4:30 p.m. Thursday, but the blaze had been contained.

“We’re just doing a little cleanup,” Flynn said.

Emergency crews from the Detroit Lakes Police Department, Becker County Sheriff's Office and Essentia Health EMS also assisted at the scene.

The fire remains under investigation at this time, Flynn said.
