No one was hurt in a house fire Thursday evening in the 200 block of Minnesota Avenue in Detroit Lakes, but the structure was fully engulfed when firefighters got the call, and it appeared to sustain serious damage.
A man who said he was the sole occupant of the house was safely outside when emergency personnel arrived. He told an emergency responder at the scene that there was no one in the house and no pets inside. He was sleeping on a couch in the living room when the fire broke out, and he believed it started in an ash tray, according to a man who was with him at the scene, and who said he had seen the flames while driving by and called 911. Firefighters got the resident a blanket and moved him away from the burning structure.
Detroit Lakes firefighters were on the scene minutes after the fire was reported about 9:30 p.m., and appeared to quickly knock down the blaze. Detroit Lakes police officers and Essentia St. Mary's Ambulance personnel were also at the scene.
