On the day he was scheduled to go to trial, Lake Park’s former embattled Mayor pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor traffic violation.

According to KDLM Radio, Aaron Lee Wittnebel, 33, filed petition to plead guilty on Wednesday morning to one count of driving after revocation and it was accepted by the court Wednesday afternoon.

The guilty plea means that Wittnebel admits guilt and must pay a $100 dollar fine.

According to Becker County Assistant Attorney Kevin Miller, this is a standard disposition for this type of offense.

In July, Wittnebel was seen by an off duty police officer driving a car. The officer knew Wittnebel’s license was revoked because of a prior DWI conviction from 2010 in Clay County.

Wittnebel had denied the accusations and demanded a trial by judge.

Wednesday, Wittnebel’s attorney presented the plea petition. The driving offense is closed. It’s unclear if this plea will have an effect on Wittnebel’s 5-year parole from an Alford plea made last spring in connection to a charge of exploitation of a vulnerable adult.

He served jail time and paid all fines and restitution. He has since resigned as Lake Park mayor.
