At a special meeting on Monday, the White Earth Tribal Council approved resolutions extending the deer hunt; making it easier for tribal employees to run for office; and helping seniors clear off snowy roofs, according to a news release from the Tribal Council.
Roof snow removal for tribal elders
In order to support strong, ongoing commitment to the care of White Earth elders, the Tribal council approved winter 2020 budgets to continue the Elder Snow Removal Program. This program will benefit tribal elders this winter through protection and maintenance of the roofs of their homes due to the heavy snowfall recent storms have brought to the region.
No pay loss for tribal employees running for office
The council also passed a resolution easing financial burden of tribal employees running for tribal office. The move revises an out-of-date policy to allow employees to continue supporting their families monetarily by continuing to work in their position. Previously, the policy stated that “successful candidates of the Primary Election will be placed on an unpaid leave of absence as of the date of the Primary Election Certification.”
White Earth deer hunting season extended this year
The council passed a resolution approving an extension to the 2019-2020 deer hunting season. The season will be extended through Jan. 31. Proper management ensures that tribal members will be able to harvest game species during hunting seasons for many years to come.
