Election season is here for White Earth: Candidate filing opens Tuesday for tribal chairperson and District 3 committeeperson on the Tribal Council. Both are four-year terms.
Candidates can file with the White Earth Legal Department at the Tribal Council headquarters in White Earth Village during regular business hours, beginning Tuesday, Jan. 14. Filing will close at 4:30 p.m. Jan. 24.
The Primary Election is March 31 and the General Election will be June 9, if necessary. If a candidate receives more than half of the votes in the primary, that candidate is the winner and no further election is required for that position.
Eligible candidates will be certified by Feb. 10. Challenges to certification matters will be due by Feb. 12, according to a White Earth Nation news release.
For filing questions, contact the White Earth Legal Department at 218-983-4649.
Copies of the 2020 MCT Election Calendar, White Earth Election Notice, MCT Election Notice, and MCT Election Ordinance can be viewed at www.whiteearth.com.
The positions are currently held by Michael Fairbanks and Umsy Tibbetts. Fairbanks was elected tribal chairman in a special election in August to fill the remaining term of Terry Tibbetts, who won a four-year term in 2016 and died in March after an illness.
Eugene “Umsy” Tibbetts has represented District 3 since 2016. The district includes Callaway, Ogema, White Earth, Pine Point and Elbow Lake.
