This is May 15 and Tax Day is here: Property taxes are due today for the first half of the year, and can be paid by phone or electronically at the Becker County website, according to Auditor-Treasurer Mary Hendrickson.

Go to Online Services at the top of the county website home page and scroll down to Pay Property Tax Online near the bottom of the list. Here is a direct link to the page.

The late fees are pretty steep: 4% of taxes due on commercial and personal property from now until June 4, then an additional 1% per month until paid, Hendrickson said. Homestead property late fees start at 2% until June 4, then 1% more each month.

Only two requests have been made so far for hardship abatements, although several business owners have asked about the option, she said.

“It’s been a tough year for some of these businesses -- I’ll try to work with them,” she said.
