Buying a home is a major investment. A homebuyer education program coming to Detroit Lakes offers the chance to be informed before you buy.

"Home Stretch" is an eight-hour class offered by a network of trained homebuyer educators throughout the state. This free class will be offered from 5-9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, and 5-9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18. Located at Mahube Community Council, Room 215, 1125 West River Road, Detroit Lakes, the class also includes a free half-hour session with a trained housing counselor, plus dinner both evenings and opportunities for free follow-up counseling.

"Home Stretch helps buyers understand how to find the best house, best price and best loan for them," said Homebuyer Educator Rosy Hjermstad, "and thanks to grant support, it is absolutely free."

The agenda focuses on steps to homeownership, budgeting, the closing processing and more. Games, videos and special guest presenters from the lakes region -- including a home inspector, loan officer, and real estate agent -- make learning fun and understandable. Participants leave with a Home Stretch manual that outlines the home-buying process step-by-step, and also provides helpful post-purchase information on home maintenance and foreclosure prevention.

To pre-register, call Midwest Minnesota Community Development Corporation at 847-3191 or toll-free at 1-800-752-6579. Midwest Minnesota Community Development Corporation is a private, non-profit corporation providing housing, business and community development services statewide. Home Stretch is made possible by the support of the Minnesota Home Ownership Center, Rural LISC and White Earth Investment Initiative.
