GRAND RAPIDS - An Itasca County man has been sentenced to serve 10 years of probation for a July incident in which he briefly kidnapped his ex-girlfriend and led police on a high-speed chase.

Rodney Jacob LaBrosse, 18, of Grand Rapids will not serve any additional jail time beyond the 96 days he already has served. He received a stay of imposition at sentencing Monday in State District Court in Grand Rapids from Judge Lois Lang.

LaBrosse pleaded guilty in October to felony charges of kidnapping and fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle.

Authorities said LaBrosse held a knife to a friend’s throat and forced her to help him abduct his ex-girlfriend and infant son. They picked the woman and child up, and LaBrosse refused to allow the woman to leave the vehicle or make phone calls for help; at one point he placed her in a chokehold.

LaBrosse later released all of the occupants from the car, and led law enforcement on a five-mile chase before surrendering.

Among other terms of probation, LaBrosse must pay $1,135 in fines, complete domestic violence treatment, register as a predatory offender and maintain full-time work or school.
