A Waubun man has been sentenced in Becker County District Court on a felony charge of motor vehicle theft, in relation to a July 6 incident at Hansen Auto Sales.
A second motor vehicle theft charge against Anthony Lee Libby Sr., 25, of 2586 State Highway 113, Waubun, was dismissed per plea agreement.
Libby was ordered to serve 15 months in prison, stayed on conditions including completion of 180 days in jail and up to five years of supervised probation. He must also complete an undetermined amount of community service hours in lieu of $585 in court fines and fees.
Libby was accused of stealing a black 1991 BMW from Hansen Auto Sales on May 31, and a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am from the same business on July 6. (It was the charge related to the earlier incident that was dismissed.)
According to the first criminal complaint, Libby allegedly took the BMW from the Hansen Auto Sales lot on May 31 without permission. The vehicle, valued at about $3,000, was recovered in White Earth later that same day.

In the second incident, Libby reportedly had taken not only the Grand Am itself, but the vehicle title and car keys. The theft was discovered when a relative of Libby's called the Hansen Auto office and asked if they had a 2000 Grand Am missing.
Apparently, Libby and a woman named Melissa Tyge had sold the vehicle to the man on July 7 for $600 cash, saying they were trying to raise money to get to Rochester. They then turned over the vehicle title to him, and Libby signed the bill of sale.
