It was an unusually quiet holiday weekend for area law enforcement agencies this year.

Unlike 25 years ago, Detroit Lakes is becoming more of a family vacation city instead of a party spot, Becker County Sheriff Tim Gordon said.

"It was steady, but it wasn't overwhelming," he said. "We're happy accidents and altercations were down."

No major accidents were reported this weekend here.

And even though altercations were down, the Detroit Lakes Police responded to a few fights and alcohol-related incidents.

The Becker County Jail had eight bookings with two alleged burglars and the rest with alcohol related offenses, Gordon said.

"We went into the weekend low on (jail) population and we maintained," he added.

Gordon credits the collaboration between law enforcement agencies, the boat and water safety program and traffic enforcement for the decreasing 4th of July crimes over the past couple of years.

"We just want people to feel safe and be safe," he said. "And it's taken all the agencies working together to achieve that."

Now in his 33rd year at the Becker County Sheriff's Department, Gordon said compared with 100 jail bookings about 25 years ago, the area is becoming a safer, more family-oriented place.

"We've seen a lot of transition through the years," he said.
