A Detroit Lakes juvenile made his first appearance Monday in Becker County District Court on a felony charge of motor vehicle theft and related misdemeanor counts of failure to stop at the scene of an accident and driving without a valid license.

Scot William Ullyott, Jr., 16, of 12565 Abbey Lake Dr., Detroit Lakes, is accused of taking a motor vehicle belonging to a fellow high school student and driving it to the M&H convenience store in Detroit Lakes on Sept. 30, without the permission of the vehicle's owner.

According to the complaint filed Oct. 14, Ullyott had been given the keys to the vehicle by the owner so he could retrieve a camera from inside -- not so that he could drive the vehicle. Yet Ullyott took the vehicle to M&H and proceeded to crash it into a pole, totaling the vehicle. He did not have a valid driver's license at the time of the incident.

A victim affidavit seeking over $6,200 in restitution has been filed against Ullyott, who denied the charges against him at Monday's hearing. He will make his next court appearance at a Nov. 23 pretrial hearing before Judge Peter Irvine.
