A community forum for grandparents and other relatives raising children, and professionals and others who work with kinship families is Tuesday, May 9, from 5 to 8 p.m. in Mahube Community Council, 1125 West River Road, Detroit Lakes.
According to the 2000 census figures for Minnesota, there has been a 100 percent increase in children who live in grandparent-headed households in the past 10 years. Minnesota's kinship numbers place it the sixth fastest growing state for relative caregiving.
An attorney and a behavioral health consultant will address legal, social and emotional issues faced by kinship caregivers. Two hours of CEU approval is available, childcare will be provided on site, and a light supper will be served.
The forum, sponsored by Mahube Community Council's Relatives As Parents Program, Minnesota Kinship Caregivers Association, and AARP MN, is free to kinship families. A $10 fee will be charged for professionals.
Please call 218-732-7204 or 800-450-1385 to pre-register.
