Klyve agrees to stay on DL board

The search for a school board member to fill the most recent vacancy looks optimistic, as one of the former members whose term was up in December is now interested in coming back.

Tom Klyve served on the Detroit Lakes School Board for five years before deciding to call it quits and not run for re-election in November.

But when Cyndi Anderson resigned in December, her remaining two years seemed doable for the businessman who commutes to Fargo for work every day.

"Being on the board for five years, I've been supported by my employer and my family and they all think I should do this," Klyve said.

Board chair David Langworthy said Klyve has been recommended by a couple of board members as a fit candidate for the job.

Earlier this month, the board decided that members would send their recommendations to the chairman who would then contact potential candidates to see if they're interested in serving.

Langworthy said Klyve is so far the only candidate who would accept the nomination.

"When I had a chance to speak with him, he was very interested in coming back and helping out," Langworthy said.

Klyve is a finance officer for NetHertz Corporation in Fargo. He said although everyone at work was supportive of his serving on the Detroit Lakes School Board, it was still difficult sometimes to arrange meeting schedules, which is why he decided not to run for re-election.

But now that the board is in need of an experienced familiar face, he said he wants to return.

"I've had a number of people in the community ask me to continue to serve," he said, adding that his family and employer said "two years, we could do two years."

And with new members Ladd Lyngaas and Brenda Muckenhirn starting this year, one more new member would make 50 percent of the board new, he said.

"The complexity and learning curve of the district's business is such that experience can be beneficial," Klyve wrote in a letter to the board.

The board will still consider other candidates who want to serve, Langworthy said. Interested parties are asked to contact the chairman or the administration office at 218-847-9271 by Tuesday, Feb. 1.

Board members will likely vote on an appointment at the Feb. 14 regular board meeting.
