Letter: Please donate to Helmets for Kids

Being a brain injury survivor and five time cross country bicyclist, I feel that it is my duty to prevent kids from going through what I've been through every day of my life -- living with the effects of a sever brain injury.

Being a brain injury survivor and five time cross country bicyclist, I feel that it is my duty to prevent kids from going through what I've been through every day of my life -- living with the effects of a sever brain injury.

In forming Helmets for Kids, I found "purpose" in being a brain injury survivor. I travel throughout the United States giving away bicycle helmets, free of charge, to those who need them and telling them why to wear them using my brain injury as an example.

On Feb. 27, I gave away 140 helmets at the low income dental screening at St. Mary's Regional Health Center in Detroit Lakes.

I operate on donations, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you know of any helmet needs, please let me know, as I am always looking for speaking opportunities.

I speak with kids about bicycle helmet safety, high school and college students about the dangers of drinking and driving -- my brain injury was the result of an alcohol related accident, and with groups about what riding bicycle across the United States looks like through the eyes of a brain injury survivor. I also give my testimony in church settings.

I feel so strong about this effort that I've quit my job to pursue it full time and I've borrowed money to buy helmets. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

You can send donations to "HELMETS FOR KIDS," Mike Heikes, 23071 Co Hwy 1, Fergus Falls, MN 56537 or call 218-736-6023 before 7 p.m. -- Mike Heikes, Fergus Falls
