On the morning of August 21st my husband was transferred from St. Mary's Hospital Emergency Room to MeritCare Hospital via ambulance. The ambulance was running with full lights and sirens. The driver blew his horn at intersections and to get the attention of drivers that did not yield to the emergency vehicle. I was a passenger in the front seat of the ambulance. Seconds and minutes were crucial in getting my husband to MeritCare's Trauma Center. I could not believe the number of vehicles traveling Highway 10 oblivious to the approaching ambulance. Numerous times vehicles failed to follow driving laws. Drivers failed to pull to the right and stop to allow the emergency vehicle running with lights and sirens to pass.

Please use your mirrors. Please be an alert and attentive driver and remind your family and friends to do the same. You are helping safe lives by simply allowing the ambulance timely passage. My husband and I always stop and say a prayer for any emergency vehicle and the story unfolding for the patient and their loved ones. We thank all of you who did the same for us as we passed you on Aug. 21. -- Karen Walter, Audubon
